Rather, it becomes a people-oriented place that values human experience.
As people shift attention from economy-oriented urban system to the construction of quality space,
how to improve the quality of space for residents and tourists
and create a pleasant public space have gradually become heatedly discussed matters.
The quality of urban space has been a required factor to evaluate a city.
In this context, the Competition themed on “Quality City” seeks to explore ways to improve the quality of urban space. With new understanding of humanism, the Competition attempts to identify ideas and methods of micro urban renewal, and to value up existing elements through limited investment, precise design and persistent implementation strategies.
The Competition themed on “Quality City” is aim to yield “significant” benefits through “small” interventions. Based on various types of public space in the city, such as waterfront space, green space, and places with industrial elements of Tangshan, the Competition requests for design proposals with clever concepts and approaches that can upgrade space quality, enhance spatial experience, and reflect regional spirit of humanity.
Tangshan City is lying at the center of Bohai Economic Rim Bay, it faces Bohai Sea on the south, Yanshan Mountain on the north and Qinhuangdao City on the east, and is adjacent to Beijing on the west and Tianjin on the south. Guarding the pass to North China and Northeast China, the city boasts well-developed internal traffic network, especially land and water transportation. It plays a critical role in the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, as well as the Belt and Road Initiative. Tangshan had 7,900,000 permanent residents. Its GRP stood at RMB 689 billion yuan. As Tangshan is making progress in transformation and development, it proposes the strategic positioning and development goal of "One Port, Two Cities". "One Port": Tangshan Port. It is a major hub for the transport of energy and raw materials and a major port for global trade serving major national strategies. "Two Cities": They refer to the main urban area in the center and Caofeidian Coastal New City in the south of Tangshan, which are core areas to boost the influence, quality and driving effect of the city.
Tangshan is a coastal city that has been developing industries for over a century. It is reputed as the the "cradle of modern industry in China" It is rich in mineral resources, boasting more than 50 kinds of mineral reserves. Tangshan is a place boasting rich cultural resources and great people. It is is the birthplace of Ping opera which is widely acclaimed around the world a as "Three Flowers in East Hebei" together with shadow puppets and Leting drums. It is also the hometown of many great talents, for example, Cao Xueqin, the world-renowned literary master and author of "Dream of the Red Chamber", was born in Fengrun, Tangshan.
